1. Do I need a visa to visit Sri Lanka?

Except for nationals of few countries visiting the Island on sightseeing, excursions and relaxation all foreigners entering Sri Lanka MUST obtain prior Entry Permit before arriving. Visit Visas are subject to the condition that the holder should not engage in any form of employment, paid or unpaid, or in any trade or business other than that specified in the visa. It is illegal to break the conditions of the Visa and changing the visa category is also NOT allowed once you are in Sri Lankan. (for example changing from Tourist to Residence Visa). It is very important that you obtain the correct Entry Permit before arriving to avoid inconvenience.

2. How can I get a Sri Lankan Visa

There are a number of ways to obtain a Sri Lankan Visa. You can apply to Sri Lankan Embassies and Consulates or to the Controller of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo. Visa approval time varies and in some cases may take weeks. Visas can also be arranged on arrival with prior approval.

3. When I am in Sri Lanka can I get my visa extended?

The visas can be extended / rejected by the Controller of immigration in Colombo and the application must be made before the expiry of the visa. The applicant seeking extension must meet the laid down requirements for such an extension and should be accompanied with duly filled forms.

4. Can I obtain dual citizenship?

Any Sri Lankan who obtains a citizenship of another country will immediately loose the Sri Lankan citizenship. Such persons may become a citizen of Sri Lanka again by applying for dual citizenship provided the laws of that country permit to do so. Duly filled applications should be handed over to Controller Immigration in Colombo for processing.

5. How can I get a Sri Lankan passport in a shortest possible time?

If you a Sri Lankan national living abroad or dual a citizenship holder, you can apply for a Sri Lankan passport. Duly filled applications should be handed over to Sri Lankan Embassies and Consulates or to the Controller of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo. Sri Lankan passport applications are processed and new passports are issued only in Colombo. Embassies and Consulates only accept applications and forward them to Colombo for processing.

6. How can I get my Police Clearance in the shortest possible time?

In most cases of permanent migration, police clearance is generally required by many countries. All the police clearance certificates in Sri Lanka are issued by the Police Head Quarters in Colombo. The process starts with applicant applying to the local Police Station for primary processing and it will then be referred to Colombo for secondary processing and issuance.
Obtaining a police clearance certificate is a time consuming process and there are many instances where applicants have to wait for frustrating weeks if not months to get their certificates. Follow up work in Colombo is important in most cases to speed up the process.
